Call for widening of domestic abuse task force
The Scottish Labour party has called on the Scottish government to introduce a scheme across Scotland that has proven successful in tackling domestic violence in Strathclyde.
Strathclyde Police’s Domestic Abuse Task Force is the first of its kind in Scotland, and over the past year has been instrumental in the arrest of 105 offenders for a range of domestic violence offences, including attempted murder, serious assault and stalking.
There was a 6.3% increase in the number of domestic violence incidents in Scotland last year, taking the recorded total to 55,423. This equates to over 150 incidents every day in Scotland.
Scottish Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Justice Johann Lamont MSP said:
“There is still so much to do to in order to protect vulnerable Scots from domestic abuse. We must send the strongest possible message to the perpetrators of domestic violence that it will never, ever, be tolerated.”
