Edinburgh City Council has chaired a seminar on domestic abuse which looked at how different agencies involved in domestic violence should work together to tackle the problem. The event was part of the International 16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women campaign which runs until 10th December.

The seminar looked at the innovative Caledonian System, which helps domestic violence victims by working directly with men convicted of domestic violence-related offences, with the aim of reducing their re-offending.

The programme also uses direct intervention to help men change their behaviour, and works with other agencies such as the police and social services to assess and manage the potential risk they pose.

Michelle Miller, Chief Social Work Officer, City of Edinburgh Council said:

"Approaches to domestic abuse have long focused exclusively on women and children. Their safety is of course paramount, and working directly with men, holding them to account for their offending, challenging their attitudes and tackling their behaviour are powerful strategies to keep women and children safer."
