Recent research conducted by the Umeå University in Sweden has revealed that couples that commute a long distance to work are 40% more likely to separate or divorce than couples that work closer to home.

The study, which covered more than two million Swedes who were married or cohabiting, also showed that it's the first few years of a partner having a long-distance commute that are the most trying for a relationship. The longer a couple lived with the commute, the more likely they were to stay together, as they would have had time for their relationship to adapt to the arrangement and develop strategies for coping.
