More children born outwith marriage

Recent research from America by the National Center for Health Statistics has found that there has been an increase in the number of children born outside marriage across American women of all age groups.

The figures show that nonmarital child birth has increased from 11% of all live births in 1970 to 41% of all live births in 2009.

This increase coincides with a growth in the number of women in cohabiting relationships, and an increase in the number of children born to women living with, but not married to, their partner.

The researchers say that there are public health concerns over the increase in nonmarital childbirth, because a large number of these births come from unplanned pregnancy. Research has shown that babies and mothers involved in unplanned pregnancy can suffer from a number of adverse effects.
