Dip in number of domestic violence incidents

The lack of Old Firm football matches this year has apparently led to a drop in domestic violence cases, reports the Scotsman.

The claim was made by Steve House, who is set to become the first Chief Constable of Police Scotland on 1st April this year.

Previous figures from Strathclyde Police in 2011 had revealed that the average number of domestic violence incidents reported to police rose from 67 a weekend to 107 on weekends when Rangers and Celtic were playing against each other.

Steve House reports that there has been a marked drop in the level of crime across the country now that the two teams are not in the same league.

According to the Scotsman, he explained: “We aren’t seeing those spikes that we had after Old Firm games and there aren’t the same levels. This isn’t so much about the 50,000 people at the game who are well policed, it’s the whole country that reacts, or those outside the game.”
