Links between child abuse and domestic violence

Women’s Aid is highlighting the interactions between child abuse and domestic violence, as new research reveals the large number of at-risk children affected by domestic violence in England.

The research details the experiences of children in refuge and non-refuge services across the country, and shows:

  • 35% of children in refuges who had been abused by the perpetrator were still in contact with the perpetrator.
  • 61% of children in refuges have had to move schools.
  • 25% of children in refuges have had a Child Protection Plan, while there were child protection concerns for 30% of children in refuges.
  • 97% of women in refuges had children, up from 75% in 2012.

Women’s Aid is spearheading an effort to address the overlaps between domestic violence and child abuse and encourage joint working by professionals, in light of several recent cases where children have been killed in families already known to the authorities because of domestic violence.

Polly Neate, Chief Executive of Women’s Aid said:

“Far too many women and children are slipping through the cracks of our support services where domestic violence and child abuse intersect.

"Three-quarters of a million children are affected by domestic violence in the UK, and our survey suggests that many of them will be at direct risk of physical violence, as well as the emotional damage that exposure to domestic violence does. We know that many women victims of domestic violence are frightened that if they ask the police for help their children will be taken away.

“We must act now to support women reporting violence and to prevent any more tragic deaths, and to ensure both women and children are adequately protected and supported to live safe and happy lives.”
