Adoption system criticised

A new independent report has criticised the 'hopelessly slow' current adoption system. The report, by former Barnardo's CEO Martin Narey, and commissioned by The Times, makes many recommendations for reform.

According to the Telegraph, these include:

  • placing abused children who have been removed from home straight with potential adoptive parents
  • producing council adoption league tables
  • no longer presuming that other family members may be the best people to care for the child

"Martin Narey’s report is important and timely," said Adoption UK’s Chief Executive Jonathan Pearce. "It rightly addresses many of the key issues in contemporary adoption. In particular, the emphasis on early intervention into the lives of children living in abusive and neglectful families, and pursuing care and adoption as a positive plan, is vital to improving the lives of children and their future families."
