Domestic abuse in Scotland

A recent publication from Scotland’s Chief Statistician has revealed the number of incidents of domestic abuse recorded by police forces in Scotland in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

The main findings include:

  • There were 59,847 incidents of domestic abuse recorded by the police in Scotland in 2011-12, compared to the 55,698 incidents recorded in 2010-11. This equates to a 7% increase in the number of incidents recorded in 2011-12 as compared to 2010-11.
  • Incidents with a female victim and a male perpetrator represented 81% (46,439) of all domestic abuse incidents in 2011-12 where this information was recorded, the same as in 2010-11. The percentage of domestic abuse incidents with a male victim and female perpetrator represented 17% (9,569) of all domestic abuse incidents in 2011-12.
  • Incidents of domestic abuse recorded by the police in 2011-12 involving co-habitees or partners accounted for 42% of all cases (24,055), with more cases related to partners (23%) than co-habitees (19%) where relationship was recorded. Incidents involving spouses accounted for a further 13%.

Commenting on the figures published, Health Secretary Alex Neil said:

“We have always been clear that there is no place for domestic abuse in Scotland, and tackling it is a top priority for the Scottish Government. These figures show that too many men and women in Scotland are still being subjected to abuse at home.

“That is why the Scottish Government has committed £34m to tackling domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women over the next three years. – more than double the investment made previously and we will continue to prioritise this work."
