The number of weddings carried out by the Humanist Society of Scotland increased by around 35% during 2010, with 1,706 ceremonies taking place between January and September of that year.
According to the Scotsman, Scottish Humanist weddings have been taking place since 2005, and Scotland is the only UK country where such ceremonies can legally be carried out.
The surge in popularity during 2010 means that for the first time there were more Humanist than Roman Catholic wedding ceremonies in Scotland, although the Scotsman reports that the most popular form of Scottish wedding is still a civil ceremony, with 11,430 taking place during the same period in 2010.
