Welcome for family conflict centre

Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young People, Tam Baillie, has welcomed the launch of the Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution (SCCR), which hopes to reduce the number of young people who become homeless after family conflict.

The SCCR, set up by Edinburgh's Cyrenians charity, is designed to help and support families on the verge of breakdown.

“I know from experience the difficulties for young people once they have entered the homeless system and the value of preventing it happening in the first place,” said Tam Baillie.

“Some young people absolutely have to leave home because it is not safe for them to remain. However, for many their homelessness could have been avoided with sensitive and timely support for their family,” he explained.

“It is widely accepted that prevention is a more cost effective way to deliver services, and for young people it could also be a way to save the grief and heartache that comes from starting off their adult life in a position of being homeless,” he added. “For that reason, I welcome the initiative shown by the Cyrenians in establishing this service.”
