Marriage Traditions are Still Important

A recent poll into views on marriage has found that many Americans still appear to believe in a number of long-standing traditions.

The poll, by Harris Interactive, found that the most popular tradition was that of the bride being “given away” by her father, with 84% of respondents saying they still support this idea.

Other traditions attracting wide spread approval include:

  • having a women-only bridal shower (74%),
  • the bridal couple spending the night before their wedding apart (71%), and
  • the groom asking permission from the bride's parents before proposing (70%).

However, opinion appears to be more split on some other wedding traditions:

  • 54% agree and 46% disagree that the bride should wear a white dress, and
  • 53% agree and 47% disagree that the bride’s family should be responsible for paying for the wedding.

The survey also found one tradition that the majority of Americans are no longer in agreement with – 65% said they didn’t agree with the idea of spending a lot of money on an engagement ring.

These feelings of restraint also feature in other attitudes to weddings:

  • 83% said paying for an elaborate wedding is a waste of money, and
  • 71% believe that if either partner is divorced then the wedding should be a quieter affair.
