Weight gain affected by marital transitions

Researchers at Ohio State University have conducted a study into the effects that marital transitions, such as marriage or divorce, can have on a couple's weight gain.

The study found that men were more likely to have a significant weight gain after going through a divorce. Women, however, had a tendency to put on weight after getting married. These effects were more pronounced in couples over the age of 30.

Zhenchao Qian, professor of sociology at Ohio State University, said:

“Married women often have a larger role around the house than men do, and they may have less time to exercise and stay fit than similar unmarried women.”

“On the other hand, studies show that married men get a health benefit from marriage, and they lose that benefit once they get divorced, which may lead to their weight gain.”
