Domestic abuse soars over festive period

Figures released by the Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) have revealed the shocking toll of domestic abuse in Scotland over the festive season. Police forces across the country recorded 4783 incidents of abuse between 1st – 31st December – around 154 every day.

The figures were recorded as part of the domestic abuse phase of the VRU’s Anti-Violence Campaign, which runs from 1st December 2010 – 31st January 2011. A final set of figures will be issued at the conclusion of the campaign.

Chief Inspector Graham Goulden, who heads the Anti-Violence Campaign on behalf of the VRU, said:

“We know that Christmas is a peak period for domestic abuse, but these figures are a disgrace, and a badge of shame for Scotland. The tragic thing is we are only half way through the campaign.”
